Objectives: Thirty-seven (37) students in grades 4-8th are identified as high Capable.This course is designed to support teachers in meeting the unique learning needs of the highly capable student in your classroom. Port Townsend School District Teachers will be paid for attending this workshop.

This course will provide teachers with a variety of strategies to create learning opportunities which require students to think and process at high levels. Teachers will understand the characteristics of highly capable learners and will gain a deeper understanding of who these students are and why we serve them. The class emphasis focuses on critical, creative and evaluative thinking. Teachers will gain a better understanding of how to plan for, develop and provide challenging opportunities within their classrooms.

You will have time to develop strategies for teaching highly capable students within your current content and learn about supplemental content for teaching your highly capable students.

Our Presenters: Nancy Smith and Linda Varner specialize in meeting the instructional needs of the highly capable learner in the regular classroom. Linda and Nancy have worked in the field as highly capable program specialists and teachers for over 20 years. Both of them were trained as Highly Capable Statewide Trainers and have taught classes for multiple school districts. They have also been representatives on WAETAG ( Washington Association of Educators of the Gifted and Talented). Linda and Nancy have coordinated programs in large and rural school districts throughout their careers.
